The Polio Plus Programme was inaugurated on May 1, 1987 by RI President M.A.T.Laparas. The then cabinet minister Mrs.Saroj Khoparde, for health was also present. At that time India had the dubious distinction of being the country with the most number of Polio cases in the world. There were 110 million children who needed to be vaccinated.
The Programme was divided into three parts
a) Purchase of vaccine and handing it over to the Government.
b) Purchase of cold chain equipment to be donated to the Government and maintained for a period of five years.
c) Educating and motivating the public by publicity campaigns and conducting immunization camps.
Rotary Club of Madras spearheaded this campaign and involved the government in a big way. Over the years several Polio camps have been held. Other Rotary Clubs followed the campaign.
The end result is that India is now totally Polio Free. Even now every year Rotary Club of Madras conducts two Polio camps every year.
