A formal introduction of Ambassador Dr. Pavan K. Varma followed. His distinguished career as a diplomat, author, columnist, parliamentarian, political leader, and public intellectual was highlighted. Reference was made to his extensive writings on Indian culture, philosophy, public policy, and history, as well as his recent book, The Lady Who Carried the Monk Across the River. His contributions to literature and public discourse were acknowledged.Dr. Naveen Jayakumar was then introduced as the moderator for the evening. His accomplishments as an ophthalmologist, quizmaster, musician, and moderator of literary and cultural events were outlined. Dr. Naveen Jayakumar commenced the interactive session with Ambassador Dr. Pavan K. Varma. Referring to the guest’s latest book, The Lady Who Carried the Monk Across the River, he initiated a wide-ranging conversation exploring Dr. Varma’s experiences as a diplomat, author, thinker, and politician. W i t h o v e r 7 0 R o t a r i a n s a n d A n n s i n attendance, from seasoned old-timers to enthusiastic green members, the evening had the perfect mix of warmth, laughter, and nonstop chatter. A giant screen had been thoughtfully put up for the CSK vs LSG IPL match, but truth be told, the real entertainment was happening off-screen! Animated conversations, chilled cocktails at two bar counters, and irresistible snacks ensured that very few people remembered to check the score.And then came the food. The menu was so elaborate that it deserved its own introduction, while the dessert counter was nothing short of dangerous.

The ambience was magical with lively conversations creating the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening of warmth and camaraderie. Guests were treated to a carefully curated spread of exotic delicacies that delighted every palate. The highlight of the evening was the rich and flavourful Exotic Soup Exogaline Corbaze, whose unique blend of spices and textures set the tone for the culinary experience ahead. The aromatic Paya Curry, simmered to perfection, added a traditional touch and was relished by all present. The vegetarians enjoyed a kuzhi panniyaram fried in ghee with spicy tomato Thokku bringing the dinner to a delightful close with the much-loved Mukkani Ice Cream, a refreshing dessert inspired by a classic trio of mango, jackfruit, and banana flavours that beautifully celebrated South Indian tastes.

The Treasure Hunt Car Rally, conceptualized and led by Rtn Jagdish Bhatia with valuable support from Mr Naresh Bangara and ably coordinated by President Nikhil Raj along with our other Rotarians Rajesh Mani, Rajesh Vummidi and Ravi Ramachandran, was executed with remarkable enthusiasm and precision. This morning, 27 Mar 26, a little band of about ten RCM members made a very special visit to Sullerikattukuppam, the fishing hamlet where our club undertook Tsunami rehabilitation work almost 22 years ago. We went there at the community’s invitation, as they wished to honour our club, and particularly Rtn Vivek Harinarain, who poured his heart and soul into working with the Government of Tamil Nadu to secure official land documents (Pattas) for the residents. These are families who have lived on that land for generations, yet for years never had the dignity and security of being recognized as its rightful owners. Today, they elebrated that longawaited recognition. The event itself was simple, crisp, and deeply moving. The villagers spoke with warmth and pride, expressing their heartfelt satisfaction and gratitude for our role in facilitating this milestone in their lives.

Our Board—minus a few absconding souls, set off to Bangalore with spouses in tow, proving once again that Rotary fellowship travels very well, especially over a weekend. The visit became all the more memorable with a warm and lively meeting with Rtn. Sukhen Padmanabhan, President of the Rotary Club of Bangalore, and Rtn. Kavita Muthappa, Secretary. What followed was a fine Rotary ritual at its elegant best: an exchange of flags, followed swiftly by an exchange of ideas—on fundraising, CSR, The Rotary Foundation, and even a proposed golf event between the two clubs. In short, banners were swapped, brains were picked, friendships were strengthened, and plans were cheerfully set in motion. A weekend well spent, well shared, and very well Rotaried.

The "Holy Tai Chi Vibe" group gathered for a serene and energizing session that participants described as a "beautiful meeting of minds and matter". Set against the backdrop of Girish and Rtn Shakthi’s beach house, the morning offered a perfect setting for a "sublime communion with nature," incorporating the elements of Bhoomi (Earth), Akash (Sky), Jal (Water), Ahaar (Food), and Aham/Atma (Self). The Session The Tai Chi session was led by instructor Rose, whose guidance made the morning truly special. Special gratitude was also extended to Masters Harold Ji and Aruna Ji for providing a glimpse into the spiritual space of Tai Chi.The Hospitality A major highlight of the event was the warm hospitality provided by the hosts, Girish and Rtn Shakthi. A delightful afternoon unfolded at Sumit and Prerna’s beautiful home down ECR. Their house was a serene haven filled with plants and bathed in natural light. With open airy spaces, it instantly put everyone at ease. Quiet and peaceful, it was the perfect setting to unwind and socialize. Their calm and friendly dog, Choco, happily greeted guests and was always ready for a cuddle from all. A poolside bar added to the relaxed vibe, where drinks flowed and conversations blossomed. The food was a true highlight. Starting with charcuterie boards, the delicious Gujarati dish pathra, and flavourful podi idlis, there was something for everyone to enjoy. A wonderful spread of dishes made with homegrown vegetables, lovingly nurtured by Sumit’s mother, included fresh salads, crispy vegetables, chole kulche, rice, and gravys.

Mansi, the queen of hospitality, personally fed starters to each guest, ensuring that no plate and no heart was left empty. From quirky “fun facts” that revealed hilarious secrets to a circulating gift game honoring service, joy bubbled in every corner. The feast was legendary: tangy dahi papdi chaat, indulgent biryani, and addictive paan shots (Aswath even smuggled a few home!). By the night’s end, bellies were full, spirits soared, and bonds deepened. It wasn’t just an evening; it was a masterclass in fellowship, leaving all richer in laughter and love.

Because he had something unique and fun in store for all his guests: a heady game each, of darts, air pistol, air rifle and archery! In the heart of the city! At his private range! (With a rousing game of croquet set up for anyone who wanted to warm up!) The Holistic Committee and the Fellowship team put an outstanding event together on Sunday morning, where nearly 30 Rotarians and spouses got ogether, and involved all of us in something new to learn and fun to try.

The starters vanished faster than attention spans in math class, while Bollywood hits triggered dance moves last seen in PTA nightmares. No lectures, no uniforms (well, technically yes—but irony counts), just pure nostalgic chaos served with a twist of sarcasm and possibly lime. School was never this wild. Or tipsy. Or… loud. Attendance: 100%. Maturity: still pending.

Last week, our Rotary Club hosted a special screening of the documentary CAUVERY: The River of Life, a powerful film that captivated an audience of about 50 members and guests. The beautifully shot, one-hour documentary follows the course of the great River, capturing its vibrant ecosystem and the lives?both human and animal?that it sustains. It brought to focus the threats of deforestation and environmental degradation facing the region. We were honored to have with us SARA (Saravanan), the Director, his presence, along with the chief photographer Sripad Sridhar, Director of Music, Arun Suradhaa, who brought a deeply personal dimension to the morning. They graciously took questions after the screening, especially from a group of engaged teenagers. Their curiosity and thoughtful questions reflected how powerfully the film resonated with younger viewers.

Beneath a cloudy night sky, tall coconut and mango trees swayed to the gentle breeze. The Rotary Club of Madras witnessed a beautiful garden come to life. Yes, this was the second Fireside of the new Rotary year. Each of us was greeted by the lovely Rtn Nalini and the gracious Radha, and led to a garden dotted with elegant tables, ambient lighting and live music by none other than Nabrun Ghosh. The night was vibrant, conversations flowed, great food, curated drinks and wonderful music set the tone for the evenings celebration. Meaningful conversations created new bonds while nostalgic songs filled the air. The abundant warmth and ease even led to impromptu dancing. Inside their beautiful home, a wonderful dinner awaited us. Rotarians and their spouses continued their animated conversations all through dinner, discovering old connections while making new friendships.
